jollygoodfellow Formex debut

Now we are back home after our first fair – Formex January 2013 in Stockholm “the largest interior design fair for Nordic design”. It had a dramatic start when we were driving from southern Sweden to Stockholm in a snowy and slippery weather. Our car skid and we drew off the road. Shocked but happy to have no injuries we moved all the packing and exhibition things to a rental car. After a nights sleep and pondering we continued to Stockholm and set up our booth at the Young Designers area. Our exhibition stand was designed to also work for a 9 months old baby (some specially designed toys at the floor and no posters within reach, a good choice since our youngest daughter stayed with us through the whole fair). Some of the new prints are now available in our shop.

We met a lot of nice people both among the visitors (press, shop owners and some looking for inspiration) and among the exhibitors. It was really nice to talk to some reseller we mostly have contact with through mail, like Anna in Paris, Kohsuke in Helsinki and Jessica from Rädda Barnen and the stylist Lina who suggested our calendar to the Rädda Barnen Design Shop.

An inspiring senior interior designer from Finland said about our paper bag hand outs “this is a piece of art, it will go straight up on the wall”. Small things like that make us happy.

Now we are inspired to keep working with our prints!

Esperanto

Ĉu vi parolas Esperanton? (Do you speak Esperanto?)

It’s really fascinating this ambitious idea to create a new language to foster harmony between people. Esperanto is, after 125 years, still spoken, but I guess English is hard to compete with (which we also use on this web site). If it wasn’t for M. A. Numminen we might not have thought about it  that much. But a language he knows and even sings in must be worth a hand silkscreened poster!

Esperanto is the most widely spoken constructed international auxiliary language. Its name derives from Doktoro Esperanto (“Esperanto” translates as “one who hopes”), the pseudonym under which L. L. Zamenhof published the first book detailing Esperanto, the Unua Libro, on July 26, 1887. Zamenhof’s goal was to create an easy-to-learn and politically neutral language that transcends nationality and would foster peace and international understanding between people with different regional and/or national languages.

This poster is part of a series we are working on that explores the graphic expression of languages (and the relationships between people) with the starting point in Sweden, where we live.

urbnCal c/o Rädda Barnen Sverige

raddabarnen
A large pre-order from Rädda Barnen Sverige played a crucial role when we decided to go for a new edition of urbnCal. It is a great honor for us and we have also decided to donate 25 sek to Rädda Barnen
for every calendar sold in Sweden (if you live outside Sweden we leave it up to you if you want to donate some money or time to charity, maybe your local Save the Children organisation?).

The calendar is ready and the first packages have left for Stockholm, Oslo, Taipei and Osaka. Next Saturday 6/10 it’s time for release!

Hemp

A few weeks ago, while visiting Mossagårdsfestivalen, we bought a 100% hemp shirt which really felt nice, like linen. It’s going to be interesting to see how it ages.

Industrial Hemp or “hemp”, can provide many of the raw materials  we need as a society to function.  Hemp food, hemp oil, hemp plastics, hemp insulation, hemp concrete, hemp paper, and other hemp composites all available today!  And yes, the list goes on and on. Plus, Hemp is both Eco-friendly and Renewable.   Hemp is one of the fastest growing plants in the world producing about 10 tons of dry product per acre per year.  Hemp was one of the first plants to be processed and used by humans making the history of hemp over 12000 years long!  Hemp Building materials are becoming more and more known and available as well!

says hemp.com and further:

Hemp, like flax (linen) is one of the bast fibers. When weaving with hemp yarns, you can treat it like a linen yarn, using similar setts. It improves and softens with age. Hemp is also mildew resistant, making it an excellent yarn for towels, bath linens and carpet warp as well as in fine table linens and clothing.

Interesting! We hope you will find some hemp tote bags or hemp scarves  with our print soon!
